Chapin Hall surveyed in 2017 to determine the prevalence of youth homelessness and found that one in 10 young adults ages 18-25 and one in 30 youth ages 13-17 experienced a form of homelessness over 12 months.
As a result of this study, Montana YHDP can conservatively estimate that 11,000 unaccompanied youth are at risk of homelessness in Montana. Risks include experiences of poverty, family homelessness, housing instability, youth in crisis, involvement in the child welfare system, participation in the juvenile justice system, and disconnection from school and employment.

youth action board
The Youth Action Board actively engages people ages 16-25 with lived experience of housing insecurity and assists youth services providers authentically engage youth and improve youth homeless services at a systematic level.
YAB members work in partnership with YHDP grantees to improve our understanding of youth homelessness in Montana. They also assist in identifying housing, health, education, employment, and social-emotional well-being needs for youth experiencing homelessness, discuss the current homeless response system, and identify housing and service gaps for youth.
